NEW PHONE SYSTEM: Help for UI Benefits
The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) announces a restructuring of its Unemployment Benefits Call Center. The new approach is a two-tiered system that establishes one phone line, 303-318-9123 or 1-866-422-0401 for new claims filing, and another, 303-318-9000 or 1-888-550-2800 for questions and problems.

SECTORS Act Introduced in 111th Congress
Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Patty Murray (D-WA) recently introduced S. 777, the Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success (SECTORS) Act of 2009, with Reps. Dave Loebsack (D-IA) and Todd Platts (R-PA) introducing the House companion bill (H.R. 1855). Developed in collaboration with The Workforce Alliance and other experts in the workforce field, the legislation would promote long-term competitiveness for American industries and employment opportunities for America’s workers.

JANE OATES: New Assistant Secretary of Labor
Jane Oates has been confirmed as the Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment and Training Administration. Ms. Oates was formerly the Executive Director of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Jon S. Corzine as a member of his cabinet. Prior to joining Governor Corzine in March, 2006, she was the Senior Policy Advisor on higher education, national service, adult literacy, education research, and workforce issues to Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).

FIPSE COMPETITION: Innovative Strategies in Community Colleges
The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) is pleased to announce a Special Focus Competition – Innovative Strategies in Community Colleges for Working Adults and Displaced Workers for fiscal year 2009. The competition opened June 5, 2009 and closes August 4, 2009. PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES: Student Aid for Unemployed
President Obama recently announced that unemployed workers receiving unemployment benefits may qualify for a special hand in paying for education and training. Aid can be significant: In particular, the Federal Pell Grant program can provide up to $5,350 for educational costs at community colleges, colleges and universities, and many trade and technical schools. Do It. is a nationwide effort supported by the National Association of Manufacturers and The Manufacturing Institute, employers within the manufacturing economy and other groups around the country. The National Network of Sector Partnerships (NNSP) has developed a tool – the Recovery Act Summary by Industry Sector – to identify potential funding available to initiatives working in particular industry sectors from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This tool is intended to help sector initiatives and supporters identify funding opportunities and it also offers an overview of ARRA’s potential impact on specific industries.
